Chasing a severe weather risk today in Oklahoma: it was a BUST

5:41AM

Reviewing the WX models this morning and it looks like a chase will likely happen today — if I can get out of the office early enough.  Like yesterday, I think the majority of the storms will probably develop in the late afternoon and evening.  Even with my “to-do” list at the office, I should be able to make it out of the office early enough to catch some of the action.

Heavy rain and hail will be the biggest risks, but there’s a chance for a few tornadoes as well.  We could see 1-1/2″ precip from the storms locally.

The most difficult thing today will be picking where to go.  Hopefully the data will tighten the target area up as we go through the morning.

Well, the models don’t look as good as they did earlier, but there’s still a chance that something will develop a little later.  The best is actually in Texas right now, but I’m not heading that far south.  I may get west of I35 and take a look again.

In Billings, waiting for a sign.  Any sign.  Nothing is happening right now, other than the storms in Texas, which are moving into Oklahoma.  I’m not going to go that far west.  I guess I’ll sit here a bit and see what develops.

6:28 PM

Yep, still sitting here in Billings.  Storms are 100 miles to the north,100 miles to the south and 120 miles to the west.  Damn.  I am in a severe t-storm watch box now.  Maybe things will happen yet.  I can hope.

Well, nothing developed and my brakes were acting a little strange so I decided to come back to Tulsa before the sun set on me.

I’ve not had a bust chase this year, so it was bound to happen.  Unfortunately, it happened on the only day in May I was able to chase.

There’s always next time.  Right?

So, the truck goes to the shop tomorrow.  Maybe it’ll be ready to chase again on Friday.

Tulsa is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 4AM.  I appears that something will likely develop overnight.  I doubt I’m going to stay up to watch it.

Good night.
