One Day: let’s start the day with sleet

Sleet falling at the homestead this morning

Waking up at 5:30 on a Monday when it’s a day of vacation is bad enough, but the pitter-patter of a soft rain has been replaced with the sounds of hard sleet hitting the windows of my bedroom.  As if half-a-foot of rain isn’t enough, let’s throw a little winter in with it.

Yes, we’re still under a Flood Warning, and a Wind Advisory, but we’re adding a Winter Weather Advisory to the mix.  It’s only 34° and the sleet is beginning to accumulate, causing some slick spots on elevated roadways around Tulsa, or so the scanner is telling me.  Some sort of wintry mix (rain, sleet, snow) is expected through the day.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TULSA HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER
ADVISORY…WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST THIS EVENING.

* AFFECTED AREA…IN OKLAHOMA…WASHINGTON…NOWATA…TULSA…
ROGERS…CREEK…OKFUSKEE…OKMULGEE…AND WAGONER COUNTIES.

* TIMING…THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS.

* MAIN IMPACT…SLICK SPOTS ARE DEVELOPING ON AREA ROADWAYS DUE TO
ACCUMULATING SLEET.

So much for working on my tan.

Coffee.

9:11 a.m.

I’m still getting rain and sleet here at my house, and it looks like it might be changing to snow.  It’s not going to get better either.  After a high of 35°, the temperatures will fall into the upper 20s by 5 p.m.  A rain/sleet/snow mix will continue through the day.

On the good side, the rain shouldn’t be as heavy as it has been the past couple of days.  I may have survived the flood of 2015.

It looks like the rain and snow and sleet are slowing down some.  For now, anyway.

The forecast is still saying we could see light snow and rain up until around 3:00 this afternoon.  Temp is 33° right now and that will drop later.  I guess I should plan my escape to the market soon.  No, I didn’t make it yesterday.

The NWS is still talking about a chance of snow later in the week.  That’s something to look forward to.

I had a simple breakfast this morning.  One egg, over medium, a slice of toast and water.  I’m not taking any chances.  After a liquid diet yesterday I am hungry, but I don’t want to jump back into big meals right away.

11:15 a.m.

I’ve been thinking about creating a graphic for my “One Day” posts.  I’m not sure what I will come up with, but maybe you’ll see it on the main page when I post this one.  Let’s see how industrious I get today.

Speaking of “One Day”, the idea behind the concept is to blog through the whole day and then post it before I go to bed that night.  One day.  I’ve been thinking of a way to share a little personal stuff with all of you without it having to be a long article or something.  Kind of a daily diary of what I’m up to.  Obviously, it couldn’t be done every day, but a few days a month is doable.  What do you think?  Good idea?  Bad idea?

By the way, do you know what A.M. and P.M. actually stands for?  A.M. stands for “ante meridiem”, which means “before noon” in Latin, while P.M. stands for “post meridiem”, which means “after noon” in Latin.  My trivial fact for the day.

1:30 p.m.

While drinking a cup of green tea (with lemon) I watched the 2013 National Geographic docudrama “American Blackout”.  It’s actually pretty good at explaining what could happen if the power grid were compromised. It also delves into how something like a widespread power outage would bring out the best and the worst in people.

If you’ve not seen it yet, it’s worth a view.

It’s a good companion to “After Armageddon”.  This story is about a global pandemic throwing the country into chaos, and what you should take into consideration if you decide to bug out.

3:40 p.m.

Scraped off the snow/ice from the windshield and ventured out to the market.  Roads were okay, just a little slushy in spots.  But, it’s still cold out – big-coat weather.

I wanted to pick up a turkey breast to bake and then slice into lunch meat.  You know they didn’t have any?  Only whole turkeys, which I don’t need.  Maybe the Reasor’s on Yale has them.  That’s a trip for another day.  I’ll get by with “processed” lunch meat for a couple of days.  I know.

I’m trying to find a replacement for my Diet Pepsi habit, so I picked up a jug of white cranberry and strawberry juice.  It’s sweet, but actually pretty good! I’m surprised.

You know, this eating healthy thing is going to be tough!

5:25 p.m.

Speaking of survival dramas, I Just found out that the new series “Colony” premieres on USA (channel 1101 on digital cable in Tulsa) January 14th at 9:00 central time.  Another series to get addicted to.

One of the lead characters you might recognize from “The Walking Dead”.  She played the mother to Carl and the wife to Rick, Lori Grimes?  It’ll be great to see Sarah Wayne Callies  in her new role as Katie Bowman.

The other lead character you may recognize from the series “Lost”,  Josh Holloway portrays Will Bowman, Katie’s hubby.

Here’s the synopsis of the series:

“While some choose to collaborate with the occupation and benefit from the new order, others rebel and suffer the consequences.  After being separated from their son during the invasion, Will and Katie are willing to do whatever is necessary to be reunited with him.  Thus, when the powerful Proxy Snyder (Peter Jacobson, “House”) offers Will a chance to get his son back if he will collaborate with the occupational government, Will and Katie find themselves faced with the toughest decision of their lives.  They will have to go beyond whatever they thought possible, risking their lives and their relationship to protect their family.”

If you’d like to get a little taste of the upcoming series, visit the official website at http://www.usanetwork.com/colony. There’s a bunch of information posted there like bio’s, interviews and behind the scenes footage.  There’s even some cool interactive stuff.

6:50 p.m.

Just finished dinner.  I wanted something that wasn’t real heavy, but healthy.  Seared Tilapia, brown rice and a little leaf salad did the job quite nicely. I posted the recipe earlier this evening, if you’re interested.

8:52 p.m.

I’ve been working on the “One Day” graphic and haven’t really come up with anything I like.  I’ll take a stab at it again tomorrow.  For now, I’m going to wind down and head to bed.

I hope you had a wonderful day.  Good night!
