GAO Report: GPS satellite failures are a possibility in the near future

Like TulsaWxChaser.com, most storm chasers depend on some sort of GPS tracking.  Whether it’s used for getting turn-by-turn directions or for mapping our location to web and radar applications, it’s a tool we’ve come to rely upon.  And we’re not the only ones who depend on it, so does our national security.  This three-decade old space-based system has become an important component of the national infrastructure and it’s paramount for our defense personnel and systems.

A recent Government Accounting Office report indicates that the existing Global Positioning System is getting old and we could begin experiencing satellite failures as early as 2010.  The program for procurement of replacement equipment, although in the works, is behind schedule and over budget.  The GAO report cites “the lack of a single point of authority for space programs and frequent turnover in program managers have hampered requirements setting, funding stability, and resource allocation.”

The Department of Defense agreed with the report findings.

Hopefully the DOD takes immediate action resolve budget problems and accelerates implementation of the latest satellite technology.  Not to meet this challenge would be a disservice to all Americans.
