Remember when a real, handwritten letter was the way we communicated?  It was always a treat to find a letter in the mailbox.

As telephone rates got cheaper, we made phone calls and wrote letters less.   We could talk on the phone for hours.  And the if you tried to call someone and they were talking to someone else, you got a busy signal.

Later, we carried pagers.  Someone would page you and you’d call them back when it was convenient.

With the computer revolution, things changed drastically.  We began using email.  Gone were the handwritten letters.

Then cell phones became affordable.  We could contact anyone at anytime.  Gone were the pagers.

Then we used email less and instant messaging more.

Text messaging replaced telephone conversations and emails are becoming a thing of the past.

Now we Tweet.  If it can’t be said in 140 characters or less, it’s not worth saying.

How I wish the art of letter writing would come back.
