Updating gun control laws is needed

In the wake of the shootings in New York and in Texas, the political divide has widened over gun control. I’m a supporter of the second amendment, but I’m also in support of common-sense laws concerning gun purchases.

I know what I’m about to suggest will anger some and others will believe it’s not enough. But, let’s face it, whatever happens with firearm laws will not please everyone. However, it’s time we reached common ground. Here’s my thoughts.

Raise the age to purchase any firearm to 21 years of age. I realize avid hunters will disagree with that. So, here’s my compromise: allow an 18-year-old to purchase long guns, used for hunting game, providing they’ve completed a hunter’s safety course and holds a valid state hunting license. In the case of semi-automatic weapons, the age should be raised to 25. There should also be at least a 5-day waiting period for any weapon purchased.

If these age restrictions and a waiting period had been in place, both of the most recent shootings may have been prevented.

I realize what I’m saying here is not popular with some people. But I’m not advocating taking away any gun ownership rights, I’m only suggesting that we pump the breaks a little. Let’s give teens and young adults the opportunity to grow up a bit before we put a gun in their hands.
