Kansas to become the new Guantanamo?

Under pressure from the President, the prison in Guantanamo Bay Cuba has been ordered to be shut down before January 2010.  Now the question is, where do we send the prisoners who are housed there? The White House is suggesting that they be brought back to the United States.  One of the locations being considered is the federal prison in Ft. Leavenworth Kansas, just north of Kansas City.  That’s only 280 miles north of Tulsa. I’m thinking that’s a little too close for comfort.

I’m not convinced it’s the right thing to do.

The art of survival includes a rule of never allowing a battle to be waged in your own backyard. You always take the war to your enemy. If this is still the way things are done, why would we move the prisoners captured during battle to our heartland and into a highly populated area.  It just doesn’t make sense to me.

When the “detainees” (that’s what the military calls terrorists) are brought onto American soil, our risk of attack by sympathizers and nut-cases will surely increase, as does the chance of escape. If that does happen, we’ll have nobody to blame but ourselves; we brought the war to America.

There’s got to be a better alternative. Maybe the desert? Maybe a boat in the middle of the pacific?  Maybe just leave them where they are.
