Weather Watch for Saturday, September 17th

2:40am

The rain has stopped in Tulsa.  All of the watches and warnings have expired.  It’s time for bed.

9:44pm

Heavy rain, some wind and small hail at my house in SE Tulsa.  Lots of thunder and lightning.  Quite a show.

Generally in Tulsa, we have an active thunderstorm with heavy rain.  Temp is 64°, RH 94%, DP 63°, cloud to ground lightning, winds gusting to 30 mph.

9:21pm

The severe thunderstorm warning for Tulsa has been allowed to expire and is now replaced by a significant weather advisory.  Small hail and wind gusts to 50mph are still likely hazards.  Could be upgraded to a warning again.

9:00pm

Thunderstorms are moving into Tulsa.  I can see lightning in the distance.  We remain under a severe thunderstorm warning until 9:15.  The radar is indicating that the worst part of this storm will be some hail and very gusty winds.  Currently it’s 72° with partly cloudy skies and thunder.  RH 68%, DP 61°.  SSE winds at 14, gusting to 24mph.

The Tornado Warning in Osage County was allowed to expire.

8:30pm

A tornado warning has been issued for SE Osage County, effective until 9PM.

Watch/Warning Map

8:14pm

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Tulsa area, including Tulsa County and the City of Tulsa.  Thunderstorms are moving into the area from the North.  From the looks of it, we can expect to get heavy rain, gusty winds and small hail.  The storm in SE Osage is capable of producing a tornado.  Need to be watching this one.

7:21pm

There’s still severe thunderstorms developing to the north in Osage and Pawnee counties.  Nothing has come close to the Tulsa area, but there’s still a possibility that thunderstorms will develop yet this evening.  The tornado warnings issued earlier have been allowed to expire, however a couple severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued.

I don’t see a chase opportunity for today.  We’re only an hour from darkness and you know me and chasing storms in the dark.  I don’t do it.  Kind of a bummer.

I’ll keep watching the radar to see if anything develops and I’ll let you know if weather conditions in the area become severe.

5:44PM

A tornado warning issued for Central Grant County in northern OK.  Effective until 6:45pm.  Severe T-storm warning issued NW Osage County, effective until 6:45pm.

Watch and Warning Map

5:37pm

“It looks to hit Wakita head on.”  Here’s the national weather service notification:

AT 532 PM CDT…NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADAR DETECTED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING A TORNADO 6 MILES WEST OF WAKITA…MOVING EAST AT 20 MPH.

5:01pm

The first tornado warning has been issued for NW Grant and NE Alfalfa counties.  Effective until 5:45pm.

It’s quiet in Tulsa.  We have clear skies and 82°.  RH is 52% and the DP is 63°.  ESE winds at 14.

4:22pm

The dryline isn’t moving east very fast.  It’s still hugging the border.  A thunderstorm is beginning to pop up closer to our area, moving into Ponca City.  There’s a bit convection near Stillwater, but nothing serious at this time.  Storms are moving northeast.

3:30pm

Here’s the latest watch/warning map.  The watch box could move farther east through the afternoon.

Watch/Warning Map

3:00pm

This posting will be updated as the day progresses.  I’m not sure about a real chase opportunity for today, but if something does begin to happen I’ll probably go out.

Right now in Zone 1 (Tulsa area) it’s 75° with a few clouds, but the dewpoints are beginning to increase.  In the past 15 minutes they’ve climbed from 60° to 67°.  The dryline is still far west, near the OK-TX border.  Storms are beginning to pop just ahead of the dryline.

Tornado Probability for Saturday

Some counties in NE OK are under a tornado watch until 11:00 p.m. and that watch box could move into the Tulsa area sometime today.  We do have a moderate risk of severe t-storms today.

It’s a wait and see game right now.  I’ve updated the chase status button to “Alert”.
