From an old dog kennel to a new raised bed vegetable garden

The dog kennel along the back fence has been empty since Dancer died.  It was overgrown with grass, weeds and who knows what else.  The kennel had to come down.

A few weeks ago, I had a couple trees removed in the backyard.  The area where the trees were taken out would require compacting, new top soil and seeding to get grass covering the bare earth.

Hey, the kennel could be converted into a vegetable garden.  The fencing would keep some of the animals – including Liza – out of it.  If I moved it to where one of the trees came out, I wouldn’t have to plant (and mow) the grass there.

Win/win.

So, that’s what I’ve done.  The kennel came down, raised beds were built and vegetables were planted.

I know it doesn’t qualify as a “prepper” garden, but it’s amazing how much can be planted in less than a hundred square feet.  It’s enough for one person.

This is what was planted:

  • 3 Slicing Tomatoes
  • 1 Cherry Tomato
  • 2 Sweet Banana Peppers
  • 2 Bell Peppers
  • 4 Bush Beans
  • 4 Cucumbers
  • 1 Zucchini
  • 36 Green Onions
  • 36 Radishes
  • 36 Carrots

These pictures were taken during the building process.

I sure hope this produces some tasty vegetables!
